Belgian defender Toby Alderweireld has officially signed for Premier League side Tottenham Hotspur from La Liga side Atletico Madrid. The newly signed contract will keep him at the North London club untill 2020.
Toby joined Atletico Madrid in 2013. He had won the La Liga title with the club and also finished runner-up behind Real Madrid in the UEFA Champions League. Due to lack of first team opportunities, he was sent on loan the succeeding season to Premier Legaue club Southampton. He was fairly impressive in the Saints’ outfit.
It was initially speculated that Soutampton would exercise the clause on his loan deal and buy him on a permanent deal. But Tottenham entered the race and eventually roped in. According to media reports, Southampton had even threatened to take legal action against the La Liga side if they sell the player to any other club.
Toby Alderweireld will now join compatriots Jan Vertonghen, Nacer Chadli and Mousa Dembele. After a lot of speculation the player has finally landed at White Hart Lane.
