Former India captain and coach Anil Kumble, who is well-known for his fierce and disciplined approach on the cricket field, which eventually got him the ‘headmaster’ tag in the later part of his career.
In a recent event, Kumble talked at length about his upbringing that helped him to become a cricketer like he is with Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella.

Talking about the lessons he has received from his parents, Kumble said,
“The self-belief. It comes from the values that you inculcate, looking up to your parents and grandparents. “My grandfather was a headmaster in school, and I know that term (headmaster) kept coming back to me later in my career. Some of them here will understand (what I am talking about).”
His comments drew some gentle advice from the audience section.
Notably, Kumble resigned from the head coach role earlier this year under controversial situations citing an untenable relationship with the current India skipper Virat Kohli. Both of them have preferred to maintain silence on this issue.

The chat between Kumble and Nadella rotated around Nadella’s new book ‘Hit Refresh’ which was released recently. Kumble recalled the Australia tour in 2003-04, as the ‘Hit Refresh’ moment in his long and illustrious career. Mentioning that every cricketer has to hit refresh at the end of every said, Kumble added that,
“But I would like to mention the Australia tour in 2003-04 when I was at the crossroads of my career. I was competing for a place in the eleven (with Harbhajan Singh). People had started talking about my retirement as I was in my 30s. I got an opportunity in the Adelaide Test which we famously won. I was expensive on day one but came back to take a five-wicket haul. I understood the need of doing something different. So I started bowling a different type of googly, something I had learnt during my tennis ball days. That is when I realized I can make subtle changes to improve my game.”

The 47-year-old Kumble stated that 1983 World Cup win and Australia’s tour to India in 2009 where the host managed to beat the Aussies 2-1, as the defining moment in Indian cricket. However, Kumble didn’t take part in that series due to an injury.
“That was the time when the team realized its true potential. Since then Indian cricket has gone from strength to strength, and we are number one at the moment,” he concluded.
