Indian skipper Virat Kohli played a gem of an innings to post put a target of 231 runs before declaring the innings at 352 for 8. Kohli reached his 50th international hundred as he reached the landmark with a brilliant six off Lakmal. KL Rahul could only manage to add six runs from his overnight score of 73 runs before getting out to Lakmal.

Sri Lanka in reply lost both their openers in quick succession as Bhuvneshwar Kumar, and Mohammad Shami steamed in with the new ball going all out in the final session of the match. The two experienced campaigner in the form of Lahiru Thirimanne and Angelo Mathews tried to steady the innings but was removed by Bhuvneshwar and Umesh Yadav as the Sri Lankan team was striving at 22 for 4. The Indian pace battery was testing the batters with every ball.

In the 14th over of the match, a light scuffle took place between Sri Lankan batsmen Niroshan Dickwella and Indian spinner Ravichandran Ashwin when the latter walked in the pitch with his spikes to get into the skins of the Lankan batsmen. Dickwella was spotted protesting against the act of Ashwin and Ashwin was seen justifying his actions. However, it didn’t last long as both the umpires handled the situation with maturity and made the players calm.
