Khaled Mahmud, the former Bangladesh skipper, is in contention to become the interim coach of Bangladesh cricket team, a report in ESPNcricinfo suggests.

The former Bangladesh skipper was approached after Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) was not able to find a suitable candidate for the job,

“If we don’t get a foreign coach before the Sri Lanka series, then we will look at a local coach. We have Khaled Mahmud Shujon; the possibilities of him taking over are highest. Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe are scheduled to play an ODI tri-series in January,” Nazmul Hasan, BCB President, said.

The report also adds the BCB approached likes of Justin Langer and Andy Flower for the job, who have denied the offer. Had Langer accepted the offer, it would have been his second stint with a national side, as he had coached the Australian team during the T20I against Sri Lanka early this year. It was the same time when a sperate Australian team was in India for the four-Test match series under the tutelage of Darren Lehmann.

Coming to Flower, the former Zimbabwe player is currently working with England Lions side. The Andy Flower coached side had already landed in Brisbane on November 14 for their tour of Australia. Their next destination will be Perth for two weeks. Next year, the England Lions squad will also travel to the Caribbean. Andy Flower seems to be happy working with the second-string England side.

It had left BCB with no choice but to look at their countryman.

Bangladesh cricket team is in sudden need of a coach after Chandika Hathurusingha resigned from his post. He had tendered his resignation while Bangladesh tour of South Africa was on but the news came into the public domain later. He is expected to take over as the next coach of Sri Lankan cricket team soon.

He will be landing in Sri Lanka next week and is expected to take up the job as soon as the Sri Lanka tour of India ends on December 24.
