Premier League champions Chelsea have apparently missed out on signing Ghanian international defender Baba Rahman. It was reported earlier that the player has agreed personal terms with the Premier League side this week. But Guardian claims that Bundesliga side Augsburg have rejected an initial €25m bid for the left back and they want €30m.
Jose Mourinho had made Baba Rahman a key target this summer as he wanted a cover for Cesar Azpilicueta in the left-back position. The club had sold Filipe Luis back to Atletico Madrid this summer.
Rahman, 21, has been a key member of the Augsburg side and had played 31 games last season in the league. Thus, it is understandable that the club is not ready to let their key player leave for a lesser value.
Chelsea on the other hand might stop pursuing their interest in getting the youngster as €30m for 21-year-old defender is too much. That also the player will be a cover defender.
The Blues are understood to be keen on signing a defender. They had Everton’s John Stones and Augsburgs’ Baba Rahman in their radar. But they have recieved a double blow as both the clubs have snubbed their bids.
Mourinho wants a long term replacement of 34-year-old John Terry. They have Kurt Zouma but the other youngster’s would have bolstered their squad.
It will be interesting to see if Chelsea still pursue their interest on Rahman after the initial reject.
