The day 1 of the first test between Sri Lanka and India started at Galle earlier today and these are all what happened during the course of the match:
The city of Galle looked in a festive move ahead of Kumar Sangakkara’s penultimate test. The banners of the Sri Lankan legend was found everywhere around the Galle International Stadium
Indian skipper Virat Kohli and his Sri Lankan counterpart pose with the Cricbuzz trophy minutes before the toss. Sri Lanka won the toss and chose to bat first.
Both the teams were in attendance for their respective National Anthem before the first ball was bowled
Ishant Sharma drew the first blood by dismissing Lankan opener Dimuth Karunaratne caught by Ajinkya Rahane at gully
Sri Lanka lost Kaushal Silva soon after and Kumar Sangakkara walked into bat. Sangakkara had a forgettable time in the middle as was dismissed for just 5 by R Ashwin
Ashwin accounted for Lahiru Thirimanne (in pic) and Jehan Mubarak and reduced Sri Lanka for 65-5 at Lunch on day 1
Dinesh Chandimal counterattacked after the lunch as he scored some quick runs.
Chandimal, in the company of Angelo Mathews revived the Sri Lankan innings as they put on 79 for the sixth wicket before Ashwin removed Mathews for a well-made 64.
Soon after, Ashwin trapped Dhammika Prasad in front and got his fifth wicket, his 11th five wicket haul in tests.
Amit Mishra picked up two quick wickets (including Chandimal for 59) before Ashwin completed the formalities by castling Rangana Herath. Sri Lanka All-Out for 183 in less than 50 overs.
Indian openers Shikhar Dhawan and KL Rahul walked up to bat and it was not the kind of start India needed as Dhammika Prasad got the better of Rahul for just 7.
Rohit Sharma looked shaky in his short stay at the crease before he was trapped in front by Mathews for just 9, yet another failure for the Hit-Man in tests.
Shikhar Dhawan played some brilliant shots in his innings and reached his third Test fifty
On the other hand, Indian skipper Virat Kohli backed Dhawan’s innings and remained unbeaten on when the stumps were drawn.
Virat Kohli, batting on 45 and Shikhar Dhawan unbeaten on 53 have a huge task in hand as they will look to continue their 100 run partnership for the third wicket and help India get a huge lead on the day 2 of the first test.
India ended the day 1 on 128-2, trailing Sri Lanka by 53 runs.
