The player who got banned for ‘peeing’

Players have been banned time and again for their behaviour on and off the field from playing cricket, the gentleman’s game. Be it fixing, be it sledging, obscene body language- the officials have been strict to the to maintain the decency of the game and the players have been punished. But here is one reason very unusual for a cricketer to be banned.

Bobby Peel, a left arm spinner, represented England for 20 test matches during the period of 1884 to 1896 taking 101 wickets. He was a good talent with the ball in his hand but was more popular for other reasons. He was quite a lot into Alcohol and got dropped for a few matches for over-drinking but the worst turn in his life while he got banned from playing for Yorkshire.

Bobby Peel

In the year 1987, after the lunch, Yorkshire was playing against Lancashire in a championship game. As Peel accompanied his team to the Sheffield ground after lunch, he did something that made the game his last for the Yorkshire.

Peel urinated on the pitch giving Lord Hawke no time to call for a ban from the side.

Bill Frindall later in an interview to BBC revealed, “An exceptionally thirsty man, Peel came on to the field at Bramall Lane, Sheffield, in August 1897 having launched well. He might have got away with it if he hadn’t urinated on the pitch in front of Lord Hawke who promptly banished him from the Yorkshire XI.”
