21 runs off 1 ball: A World record
Over the years, cricket has seen many hard hitters, many runs have been scored, but there have been some milestones that marked the modernization of the game. There was a time when scoring 350 in an ODI was safe, but then the Aussies showed the world that scoring 400 is not impossible. It was the very first time that a team touched that glorious mark, but there was something else that made a record.
That day, Australia were facing South Africa in the 5th ODI of the series between the two countries and Ricky Ponting and Andrew Symonds together created another history, they scored 21 runs of just one official ball and that too together.
Logically, 6 is the maximum number of runs that one can score of one legal ball. But in this case, looking at the humungous total already on the board, it took South African bowler Roger Telemachus to bowl 5 balls to make it a legal delivery. The Aussies showed no mercy to him and his side and went on to score 21 runs off the blunder.
The array looked like – 4nb, 1nb, 4nb, 6nb, 2
While Ponting sent the ball for a 4 off a no ball, Symonds hit a maximum off another no ball to complete the 400 runs for Australia.
