Madhevere's all round Brilliance Earns Zimbabwe 11th Place 1

Zimbabwe thrashed Canada by 137 runs at Mainpower Oval, Rangiora on Sunday (January 28) to finish at the eleventh position in the ICC Under-19 World Cup. Wesley Madhavere was the star of the match, scoring 93 to help his team post a competitive total of 272/8 before taking four wickets to ensure Canada end up on the losing side.

Rangiora has so far presented low scoring thrillers with PNG almost defending 121 and Kenya managing to defend 176, but Madhevere’s innings ensured this wasn’t another.

In a wicket where his teammates struggled to score freely, he was free flowing as he struck eight boundaries on his way to 93 from 84 balls. Other batsmen also managed to provide decent support, with Milton Shumba’s 18 the lowest score from among the top seven.

Canada bowlers were successful in restricting the Zimbabwean batsmen, except Madhavere.Aran Pathmanathan, in particular, was economical, bagging 1/29 from his 10 overs.

Eventually, 273 proved too much for Canada, losing wickets at regular intervals. Akash Gill could only provide some resistance with 63 balls 60 including six fours and a lone six.

Madhavere’s four-for with the ball was well cushioned by Nkosilathi Nungu and Taun Harrison claiming two wickets each.

This outcome ensured every game in this tournament between a Full Member and an Associate was won by the Full Member. Canada, placed high among the associates having won two games and coming close to beat Bangladesh in one can take a lot of positives from this tournament.

Brief Score: Zimbabwe 272/8 (Madhevere 93, Myers 46) beat Canada 134 (Gill 60; Madhevere 4/24) by 138 runs
