The young English defender joined Mauricio Pochettino’s side in 2014 from Sporting Lisbon for £4 million and impressed a lot in only one year.
The defender who can play as a center back, right back and a defensive midfielder is a key part of Spurs’ future plans and the length of the deal reflects it.
The defender is growing as a potential superstar for future and Spurs have warned of suitors by signing him a new lucrative deal as the stopper commits his future to the ambitious club.
In debut season, Dier made 28 league appearances and 36 in all competitions and scored two goals which came on his opening two games for Spurs. He featured in all of Spurs’ 4 matches this season and scored a goal already.
The lack of central midfielders this season saw Dier playing as a central defensive midfielder this season alongside Nabil Bentaleb. He struggled to impress in the first two games in the new role but he is adapting well and that reflected on the scoresheet when he scored against stoke City in the 2-2 draw.
A team full of young blood, Spurs have a bright future if they manage to retain the core of the team for a long time and Dier is a key part of that team along with Harry Kane, Christian Eriksen, new signing Son Heung-Min, Ryan Mason etc.
Dier has featured for England in all youth set-ups and has 23 youth caps and is currently an under 21 international. Dier was wanted by Portugal also to play international football with them as he is an academy graduate of Sporting Lisbon, but he opted to play for the Three Lions. A potentially world class player, committing long-term future to Spurs, is a great news for the Lillywhites.
