The captain and coach pair were honoured for their service to cricket, The Dominion Post reported.

Both McCullum and Hesson  said they were humbled and honoured, with Hesson saying it was a proud feeling to be recognized alongside so many other great New Zealanders.

It was also a thrill to have his skipper standing next to him on the day.

“It is a special day for both of us, but especially for Brendon for all he has achieved throughout his career.

“I’m sure he won’t talk it up, but I think what he has contributed to New Zealand cricket over all the years has been nothing short of inspirational.”

McCullum agreed the honour was incredibly humbling and while it was an individual honour, it was only possible because of the success of the team.

He had tried to be an “authentic captain” of a group of “authentic New Zealanders trying to do their best for their country”, he said.

Dame Therese Walsh, who headed New Zealand’s organising committee for the Cricket World Cup has also been awarded. She was also  the chief operating officer for the 2011 Rugby World Cup.
