Stats: Batsman who have the best and worst averages on away from home

The definition of a great batsman depends on the away from the home performance. There are many batsman who has more than fifty average at home. But, there is a huge contrast between their away and home performance. At the same time, there are many who failed to perform at home, but, were outstanding in foreign conditions.

Similarly, there are only a few players who have a good career average in the home and away conditions. Batting away from home in front of fiery bowlers in their den is not an easy job. It takes a lot of preparation and hard work to get success on a foreign shore.

Mohinder Amarnath is the only Indian batsman who was highly successful in foreign conditions in comparison to his performance at home. Of the Batsman with a minimum of 3500 runs in Test career, Mohinder Amarnath has the highest difference between home and away performance. His average in Indian conditions is only 30.44 but in away conditions is 51.66. His average difference is 21.42. Mark Butcher of England is the only other batsman who has a difference in home and away an average of more than 20. The table below lits the other batsman in details.

Among all those who featured in the above list Graeme Smith with 7,500 runs was the best batsman away from home. 

Now, we will check the list batsman who scored heavily at home but failed to cope with foreign conditions. The list is headed by Clyde Walcott, whose average at home was 69.84  but only 40.47 outside West Indies. The difference is 29.37.

Among those who have scored 7, 500 runs, former Australia captain, who bade adieu cricket after the 3-2 Ashes defeat in England, has been the worst batsman away from home. His average at home is 62.05 while away from Australia is only 39.50.

There are some other greats’ name appeared name in this list such as Denis Compton, Dilip Vengsarkar and Desmond Haynes.
