After the end of the first day of the second Test match between New Zealand and England at Hagley Oval, Christchurch, it was Jonny Bairstow and Mark Wood who were the stars of England.
Bairstow, continuing his rich form, remained unbeaten on 97 while number nine batsman for England, Wood, hogged all the limelight with his maiden half-century in Test cricket.
“I had loads of fun but the worrying thing is I’ve got a 50 before a five-for, so I’ve done that the wrong way around,” expressed Mark Wood after the day’s play.
Both Bairstow and Wood struck a handy partnership of 95 runs which brought back the balance back into the game.
“I loved batting with Jonny, a lad I’ve played with and against since I was about 11 years old. When I went out to bat we were in a bit of trouble. Jonny knows I like to have a bit of fun out there, so that made it easier,” Wood stated.
However, Wood grabbed all the headlines after quoting that he feels like Bradman as soon as he reaches 20.
“I get to 20 and I think I’m like Bradman, that’s the problem, I try too many shots,” says CSK’s latest addition to the roster.
“Me and Jonny talked about a plan and we could set up. When I first got in, Southee had done a lot of the damage and was nipping it around so it was harder. New Zealand bowled really well this morning,” revealed the 28-year old.
“Maybe it felt like we just changed the momentum a little bit and brought it back in our favour. We rotated the strike well, that’s one of the things Jonny does – he runs well between the wickets,” concluded Mark Wood.
