Former Tottenham Hotspur and Queens Park Rangers manager Harry Redknapp has revealed that Jurgen Klopp was not the first choice as the Liverpool manager after the sacking of Brendan Rodgers.

Klopp was only approached when their first choice turned down the Reds according to the veteran manager.

Redknapp has insisted that former AC Milan and Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti was the first one to be approached by the Reds for the role but the Italian legendary gaffer turned them down.

Ancelotti is currently out of work since departing Real Madrid last summer and also stated that he wants to return to Premier League again.

Redknapp claimed that he has ‘good sources’ who have told him that Ancelotti was first approached for the post.

“I have heard from good sources that he [Ancelotti] was offered the Liverpool job,” Redknapp told talkSPORT. “I don’t think [he wanted it]. They spoke to him at some stage.”

But Redknapp also claimed that Klopp has all the capabilities needed to succeed at Anfield despite being second choice.

He added: “I do like the look of Klopp, he’s a good appointment. He’s looks bright, with great enthusiasm and he looks like he could be a really good addition to the Premier League. I’m looking forward to watching Liverpool play over the next few years.

“Ancelotti’s had a little break from the football scene already and obviously feels he’s ready to come back in again. It’s got to be a big club for him, he’s a manager of Champions League clubs so he’s not going to take any job.

There are only five or six jobs he could take in the Premier League, so it’s very interesting to see what he’s got in mind.”

Speaking about a return to work, Ancelotti recently said: “I’d like to go back to the Premier League. It is the ideal environment not for football, but for the ‘game’ around football.

“You can work with the right amount of pressure, the necessary detachment and calm. Before I quit, I’d like to have another experience in England.”
