Premier League 2018/19: Brighton Stun Manchester United At Home 1

Brighton have stunned Manchester United with a 3-2 victory at the Amex Stadium on Sunday. Jose Mourinho’s men have suffered a shocking blow in the early stage of the Premier League.

Manchester United’s nightmare continues at Brighton.

Goals from Glenn Murray, Shane Duffy and Pascal Gross in the first half gave Brighton a solid start. Romelu Lukaku pulled one back before the second half and the skipper Paul  Pogba converted a penalty. But in the end, nothing could save United from losing three vital points.

Brighton took control over United right from the beginning and goals kept coming for the home side. Murray clipped a delightful finish past David de Gea before Duffy swept home after United failed to clear a corner.

Lukaku, who missed a golden chance at 0-0, nodded in a lifeline for his side. But more slack defending saw Eric Bailly bring down Gross, who dispatched his penalty a minute before the break.

As Alexis Sanchez missed he game through injury, Mourinho introduced Marcus Rashford and Jesse Lingard at half-time. But there was little improvement to their attacking display. And Pogba’s finish from the spot came too late to rescue a result.

United’s defending was not up to the mark. Bailly and Victor Lindelof did  little to convince the manager of their suitability as a duo. While Andreas Pereira and new recruit Fred were anonymous in midfield.

With a rating below 6, United’s goal-keeper David de Gea had a day to forget. In competitive games since the start of the 2018 World Cup, he has conceded  10 goals from his last 14 shots on target faced for Manchester United and Spain combined.

With this defeat, Manchester City have already stolen a march on their neighbours in the title race. In their second game, they thrashed Huddersfield Town 6-1 to make it two wins in a row.
