Arsene Wenger’s side hosted Sunderland at the Emirates on Saturday afternoon, in order to keep their challenge for the Premier League title alive and going, if they secured all three points. Early in the day, Manchester City had gone down 2-0 to Stoke City at the Britannia Stadium, which meant that the north London giants could have gone above them with a win on the night. There was no doubt that the Gunners were not having the best of times in the league and had gone three games withouth a win, which made it essential for them to win this one. Wenger was keen on getting his side back to winning ways, with some must-win fixtures coming up in the next few weeks. The Frenchman knew that his side must travel to Greece in mid-week and beat Olympiacos by a couple of goals, if they wish to go through to the round of 16 of the Champions League.
Joel Campbell opened the scoring in the game, as he gave Wenger’s side the lead in the 33rd minute of the match, before France international Olivier Giroud scored an own goal towards the end of the opening 45. Two of the most unlikely scorers for each side, as the first half ended in a 1-1 stalemate.
However, after the break the French striker scored on the Londoners to give them the lead on the 63rd minute. His team-mate Aaron Ramsey furhter added a third towards the end of the game, to ensure that they took back all three points from the game, as the match ended with a 3-1 scoreline.
