Former Arsenal winger Robert Pires has now urged the Premier League giants to make a move for Southampton midfielder Victor Wanyama, as per recent reports. The 24-year-old Kenya international was expected to depart from the St. Mary’s previously and had himself requested for a transfer, with interest from the Gunners’ north London rivals Tottenham Hotspur though a deal did not go through back then and he remained with the Saints. Manager Arsene Wenger will now be forced to sign a midfield player in the new year with both his first choice holding midfield players, Francis Coquelin and Santi Cazorla, out with long term injuries.

Also, Mikel Arteta is out with an injury at the moment, which means that the club are in need of yet another defensive midfielder and will probably look to sign one in the January transfer window.

However, club legend Pires has already picked his choice for Wenger to sign when the transfer window opens once again, as he feels that Wanyama can really make a difference to the current squad at the Emirates.

The Frenchman spoke to the London Evening Standard and expressed his thoughts on the whole situation, putting forward his reasons for supporting the move. He said, “I know Wanyama. He has the speed, skill and physique.”

“He is a very good ambassador of Kenyan football and has done well in Southampton but I hope he signs for Arsenal in the future.”

“However, I think he needs to score more goals because then he will be world-class material.”
