Premier League giants Manchester City were the only team from England who were safely through to the knockout stages of the Champions League, prior to the final set of group games. Manuel Pellegrini’s side were looking to bounce back from their 2-0 defeat at the weekend to Stoke City at the Britannia Stadium, with a win over the Bundesliga side. The German outfit had themselves shockingly beaten champions Bayern Munich in the league prior to this game and were hoping for a similar result on their travel to the Etihad.
The home side started the game positively when Spanish international David Silva scored in the 16th minute of the game for them. Despite that, the lead did not last long as Korb equalized for the visitors three minutes later. A second goal was scored for Monchengladbach by Raffael on the 42nd minute, as they went into the break leading 2-1.
A major part of the second half did not see any more goals, though there were quite a lot of chances. However, former Liverpool man Raheem Sterling scored a bracein the space of two minutes to give his side the advantage. The England international scored on the 79th and 81st minute of the match, while Wilfred Bony sealed all three points with a fourth goal on the 85th minute. It was a total defensive collapse for the away side, who had performed so well until that point.
Here are how the fans reacted after the win for City, who were already through to the next round:

People blame the teams in the Europa League for our decline in the points coefficients yet our ‘elite’ hardly do it any justice. #CL #manc

I’d say the Etihad is like a library, but that would be incredibly disrespectful to the German fans. #ManCity
