The stage was set for Team India to take firm command of the proceedings in the ongoing second Test against Australia when day three started. Well-set Virat Kohli and his deputy Ajinkya Rahane started the proceedings with the bat and had the chance to extend India’s dominance. Both the batsmen had crossed their fifties on the previous day during their 90-run stand.

Rahane had joined Kohli in the middle when the visitors were in precarious situation. Australia had finally managed to dismiss Cheteshwar Pujara cheaply to reduce India to 82 for 3 after piling up 326. However, before the hosts could make further inroads in the game, Rahane and Kohli shared a solid unbeaten partnership to put India in the driver’s seat.

But Rahane failed to capitalise on the momentum as he departed in the very first over on day three. And the India star has only himself to blame for as he played a casual shot off Nathan Lyon to depart. Lyon bowled a straighter delivery which held its line and looked harmless.

However, Rahane thought it was coming in and when he realised it was not, he ended up edging it behind the stumps where Tim Paine took a sharp catch:

India, meanwhile, lead the ongoing four-match Border-Gavaskar series 1-0 after winning the series-opener by 31 runs. A win in the ongoing game will help them not only take an unassailable lead but also retain the trophy which they reclaimed at home last year after winning the series 2-1.
