Arsenal have begun with their perennial cycle of losing players to injuries and everyone around the club have already started holding their face in their hands, probably wishing “not again”. Coquelin, Cazorla, Sanchez and Wilshere have been ruled out for weeks and the remaining midfielders available to Wenger include Mikel Arteta and Mathieu Flamini who are way past their prime.
In such times, it is being mooted that Arsenal will buy a player, an actual outfield player this upcoming window and a midfielder is their priority. One of them targets is Granit Xhaka, the exotically named defensive midfielder hailing from Switzerland who has been impressing one and al with his performances at Borussia Monchengladbach.
The 23 year old is tied down at the club until 2019 and is also reportedly very happy, expecting to stay for at least another season but a big offer might tempt the player into playing on the British shores, following his compatriot Xherdan Shaqiri but via a differing path.
Arsenal have kept multiple back ups in case this planned move fails to bear fruit. They include the young Portuguese midfielders William Carvalho and Ruben Neves from Lisbon and Porto rerspectively. Also in the said list are Victor Wanyama, currently plying his trade at Southampton and Adrien Rabiot who hails from PSG.
All the mentioned players are widely expected to leave their clubs for something bigger like the Portuguese duo or due to differences with the club like the remaining two and hence remain more attainable than Xhaka but what makes him more desirable is his outrageous form for Monchengladbach over this season ever since they turned around their initial slump. His performance against Bayern Munich alongside Stindl and Raffael had caught the eye of many a scouts and keen observers.
