Suspended Australia opener, David Warner is keen on leading Sylhet Sixers in the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) 2019. As his ban on international cricket is nearing its end, Warner wants to prove his credentials with the bat. Meanwhile, David is upbeat about performing well, both as a batsman and a leader for Sylhet Sixers.

Playing on low surfaces in Australia will help me – David

David Warner arrived in Dhaka on January 3rd and said playing on low-bounce surfaces in Australia’s club cricket will help him come good in BPL 2019. David further mentioned he talked to Waqar Younis, the head coach of Sylhet Sixers about playing in Bangladesh.

Ahead of the tournament opener, he said he had been in Dhaka and Chittagong before, and his experience will come into play. Moreover, David Warner revealed the wickets in Australia’s club cricket would only benefit him in playing here.

“I was having a conversation with Waqar [Younis, Sylhet coach] today about playing club cricket in Australia at the moment. The wickets are quite low and slow. It has been tough to adapt to those conditions but I have had a very good run of form at home and having played here in Dhaka and Chattogram before, I know what the wicket is going to be like. So for me it is about getting into a routine and rhythm and making sure I can lead from the front, from the top. So it makes it easy for the guys coming in,” he said.

I am glad to be leading a side again

Since Warner got suspended for his actions in the sandpaper gate in March last year, the left-handed opener didn’t do much with his bat. Apart from playing a few handy knocks for St Lucia Stars in the CPL 2018, David had been found wanting at the crease. Though David had been a part of many club and franchise cricket over the past few months, his aim remains to be the same, to play for Australia in the near future.

However, in the quest of getting it done, performing well for Sylhet Sixers is the only option left for him. Meanwhile, the tainted Australian is happy to get a chance to lead a team again. Furthermore, he expressed his happiness saying he is grateful.

“I am extremely grateful to be leading the side. For me it is about making sure that we as a whole, including the support staff and management, can get the best out of the players. We have to establish our best XI when we get into the park and make sure we do the right things in training. I have to make sure I am doing my job right, which is scoring runs and leading the guys on the park.”
