$9 might not be seen as an expensive sum, but these $9 cost Women BBL player Angela Reakes a suspended two-year ban after she was caught placing bets.
Investigated by Cricket Australia, Angela Reakes, a member of Sydney Sixers team in Women’s Big Bash league was found guilty of placing five bets on the man-of-match in the men’s World Cup final between Australia and New Zealand on March 29, 2015.
“All elite cricketers are reminded regularly that betting on any form of cricket is strictly prohibited,” head of the CA integrity unit Iain Roy said.
“Angela understands that in placing these bets she made a bad mistake and has acknowledged the seriousness of her error.
Reakes, who left state side New South Wales (NSW) Breakers to join the ACT Meteors in the Women’s National Cricket League this season, received the sanctions from CA’s anti-corruption code.
“She has been cooperative during the investigation and we believe the penalty in these circumstances is appropriate.”
Reakes can continue playing cricket at all levels subject to no further breaches of the code. CA would suspend any player, men or women, who commits to betting.
