Manchester United are on a nightmarish run which is their worst run of form for 17 years.

Only three wins in their last 13 matches and a shock exit from the Champions League has left manager Louis van Gaal hanging on to his job by a thread.

And according to Daily Mirror, captain Rooney has called a crisis meeting among the players to get their act together and turn things around.

The outcome of the crisis meeting was that both players and club hierarchy will work hard to get the club’s season back on track with a trip to Stoke City on Boxing Day up next.

Last month it was reported that senior players in the team spoke frankly with Van Gaal regarding his strict regime with some star players believing their long injury list is because of the over-training the Dutchman follows.

Rooney himself hasn’t been going through the best of seasons, he seems to be a mere shadow of the player he once was. United skipper’s personal goal tally has also mirrored the Red Devil’s failed attempts to find the back of the net.

Van Gaal’s depleted squad went 404 minutes without scoring earlier this season and the fans are now becoming frustrated. They have slipped nine points behind Premier League toppers Leicester City after going six matches without a win.

With the Dutchman in the firing line, former Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho is waiting for the big announcement to swoop in and take the charge at Old Trafford.

The Old Trafford board was however not interested to take any negative step against the Dutch manager, who according to them was United’s first real choice as manager after agreeing with Sir Alex Ferguson’s advice in appointing David Moyes.

But the 2-1 defeat at the hands of Norwich last Saturday, was the third consecutive defeat for the Red Devils and the most worrying fact is that the squad under LVG seems to be short of any inspiration.

A top four finish and a Champions League qualification was the minimum result they expected from this season after supporting van Gaal to the tune of £300million since his arrival at Old Trafford.
