It is no secret that Liverpool now have a huge vulnerability at the back after their recent performances and even with Steven Caulker in the side as back up, Jurgen Klopp seemingly has his eyes set on the man to save Liverpool from its troubles.

Out of favor Schalke defender Joel Matip has been linked to the Merseyside outfit over the past month and it was understood that the Reds were in pole position to sign the player in the summer when his contract with the German club expires.

However recent reports from Sky Sports has revealed that the manager is keen to the Cameroon international to Anfield before the end of this month.

It appears that Liverpool have taken their interest to the next step even as it was reported that the player has told his club that he wants to leave.

Matip has been out of favor this season in Germany and has not been able to pinch a consistent place in the starting XI. He is now on the radar for Liverpool who have conceded 32 goals in 23 Premier Leagues this season, the most by any team in the top half of the Premier League.

And according to Sky Sports, Liverpool now wants Matip to come to Anfield this month rather than wait till summer and that the English outfit have tabled a 6 million bid for the defender.

With Dejan Lovren coming back from injury and Skrtel as well nearing full fitness, the need for Matip is questionable but Liverpool are understood to be pushing through for a deal to fend off any interests from other clubs in the summer.

Atleast two French clubs are in the running for the signature of the 24-year-old and Jurgen Klopp who was an admirer of the player since his time at Dortmund now wants the player to make the move before Schalke or any other club attain his services for the next season.

It was also reported that the 6ft 4in central defender missed the latest training session with the German club which has fuelled the rumors of a move before the end of the transfer window.

Matip has 27 caps for Cameroon in his career and has scored three goals this season for Schalke. Do you think Matip will solve the defensive woes at Anfield?
