Matt Miazga, who is set to join Chelsea after passing medical at Stamford Bridge, has now been labelled dumb and donkey; also naive and soft by a former team-mate.

The 20-year-old US international centre-back arrived in UK on Thursday to face a medical ahead of a £3.5m transfer to Chelsea from MLS side New York Red Bulls.

The Secret Footballer recently got in touch with some of his contacts to collect some information about the one-cap USA international and what he heard back from a former team-mate of Matt Miazga’s, is certainly a less than glowing reference; a bit scary also.

Miazga is believed to be a “nice guy” and a “good kid”, but his ex-colleague does not think he will trouble Chelsea’s starting lineup any time soon. He went on to claim Miazga would need to be sent out on a loan move to get more experience to adapt with the English football as soon as possible.

The 6ft 4in defender is also branded as “dumber than the donkey”, naive and “plays young”. He will have to be stronger and meaner to avoid getting eaten alive in the Premier League battle ground, according to the anonymous former team-mate of Miazga.

Chelsea have long been scouting the New York Red Bulls young defender but it was still a surprise move for the Blues this week as they placed a bid for the son of Polish immigrants who is regarded one of the best prospects in the Major Soccer League.

The 20-year-old centre-back has been enjoying an impressive form for New York Red Bulls, the current employers of former Chelsea winger Shaun Wright-Phillips. The local lad (he was actually born in half an hour from the Red Bulls’ home, in Clifton, New Jersey) finally came into limelight only last season, nearly two years after his first team debut, and a switch to English football has always been a dream for Miazga.
