But recent reports have revealed that Premier League side Manchester City are now favorites to sign the England international John Stones.
The Daily Mirror, reported that Manchester City are emerging as the hot favorites to land £50 million star John Stones.
The Everton defender has not been at his best in the last few outings and seems to be unsettled at the Goodison Park and the Citizens are now understood to be interested in bringing the 21 year old to the Etihad this summer.
Champions Chelsea are still monitoring the situation of the defender but the Blue of Manchester are planning a complete overhaul at he club at the end of the season and are keen on brining the budding defender into the heart of the defense before the start of the next season.
Stones has come under fire from a section of the Merseyside fans recently and with Chelsea struggling to provide Champions League next season, the Citizens may have just stolen the lead in the race for the 21 year old.
Vincent Kompany, the long serving skipper at the club has been injury prone this season leaving the Citizens a bit weak at the back and it is understood that the Etihad outfit have made up their mind that Stones is the right man to take the club in the right direction.
Stones started the season in blistering form and has been an important player for Roberto Martinez this season and there is hardly any chance of him moving clubs this January, but it will be hard to keep hold of his star player if bigger clubs come up with offers that are hard to refuse.
Like mentioned earlier, Barcelona and even Real Madrid are monitoring the situation of the England international but it was also reported that the young defender wants to ply his trade in the Premier League only.
