Indian all-rounder Yuvraj Singh hung up his boots yesterday, 10th June. The left-hand batsman played numerous match-winning innings and was instrumental in India winning the 2007 and 2011 World Cups respectively. On the day of his retirement, Yuvi as he is famously called, interacted with the media and thanked his friends and family for the unconditional support.

He was always a flamboyant cricketer and made many friends around the globe. When asked about the batters whom he thought be extraordinary in the modern game, Yuvraj said “AB de Villiers, Chris Gayle … I think these guys were serious powerhouses when I played against them.”

The Caribbean veteran Chris Gayle shared the dressing room with Yuvraj in IPL, playing for Royal Challengers Bangalore. On learning about his retirement, Gayle tweeted, “My legend-my brother! Congrats on a fantastic career! You’re an inspiration to all of us. Wish you all the best in your next chapter!”.

A match-winner in white-ball cricket

One of the most successful white-ball cricketers of all time, Yuvraj amassed 8,702 runs in ODIs and hit a total of 52 fifties. He has also represented India in Test cricket, earning 40 caps. However, he wasn’t a regular member of the Test side and faced stiff competition from his colleagues. He started off on a high, scoring 84 against Australia on his debut. A match-winning fifty in the Natwest-Trophy helped India defeat England at Lord’s and the good times continued for the Punjab-born cricketer.

Yuvraj not to feature in IPL

He has also announced that he won’t be featuring in the IPL anymore and that he has called time on his career. Yuvraj represented Mumbai Indians in the 2019 season and the side ended up lifting the trophy. However, the veteran didn’t feature in many games after a few starts in the initial stages of the tournament.
