Chennai Super Kings (CSK) acquiring the services of Piyush Chawla for Rs 6.75 Crore was one of the biggest talking points. The franchise joined the race after Mumbai Indians backed out and continued to bid for the leg-spinner till the final bid was made, thus making Chawla the costliest Indian pick of the day.

With Chawla’s addition, CSK now have five spinners in their squad – Harbhajan Singh, Karn Sharma, R Sai Kishore, Piyush and R Sai Kishore.
Apart from Chawla, CSK bought three more players. They spent big money on Sam Curran and shelled out Rs 5.5 Crore on him. The franchise got Josh Hazlewood and Sai Kishore at their base price. They did go for Nathan Coulter-Nile but could not buy him.
When CSK bought Piyush Chawla in 2018

Chawla, who seems to be pretty excited after joining CSK, could ave played for the MS Dhoni-led team in IPL 2018. During the mega-auction for IPL 2018, CSK were pretty much interested in buying the leg-spinner. They bid for Piyush Chawla right from the start and bought him for Rs 4.20 Crore.
Chawla looked all set to play under Dhoni once again but Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) used their Right to Match Card (RTM) on him. The use of RTM card meant KKR retained him for the same amount and CSK missed out on getting services of the senior spinner.

They bought Chawla after getting adding Harbhajan Singh to their squad, meaning that CSK wanted as many spinners in their team. An IPL veteran, Chawla has 150 wickets in 157 IPL matches so far.

He hasn’t played for India for seven years and isn’t in the scheme of things either. But as we have seen in past, a great IPL season can change the whole scenario for him.
