The Ranji Trophy match between Delhi and Punjab was marred with controversy as Shubman Gill refused to walk off the field and got the decision overturned by the on-field umpire. Following umpire’s move to change his decision, Delhi’s players decided to walk off the field in protest and the play only started after the match referee’s intervention.

To make the matter worse, reports have also suggested that Gill abused the on-field umpire. Though he couldn’t make most out of the opportunity and was dismissed on 23.

The match referee will likely submit his report to BCCI, which is expected to take an action against the budding cricketer.

Gill will soon leave the Punjab camp as he is apart of India A squad for the tour of New Zealand, which starts later this month. He will be leading the limited-overs team in the one-day series which includes likes of Hardik Pandya and Prithvi Shaw.

While Gill isn’t in the scheme of things in the limited-overs cricket, his performances in the first-class fixture will have a great say in deciding whether he keeps his Test spot. Prithvi Shaw, who played two Tests in 2018, will compete with him for the reserve opener’s spot.

In his absence, Gill made it out he Test squad but could not make his debut during the home season. Their performances in the two first-class matches in New Zealand will decide which of these two players makes it to the Test squad.

As far as Ranji Trophy game is concerned, Punjab were 127/3 after 30 overs at Lunch. Gurkeerat Singh Mann scored quick 65 off 50 before being dismissed.

With two wins from three matches, Punjab are sitting at the top spot while Delhi are at the 11th spot. They are without the services of Shikhar Dhawan and Ishant Sharma for the ongoing fixture.
