The speculation of MS Dhoni featuring in the Indian team never seems to come to an end while the wicketkeeper-batsman is silent over his future. He hasn’t stated anything detailed since he featured with the Indian team in the World Cup 2011. Former Indian cricketer Sunil Gavaskar believes that now it is hard for Dhoni to make a place in the team.
After India failed in the World Cup 2019, Dhoni made himself unavailable for further tours and hasn’t featured with the team since past almost nine months. While his place in the team has been taken by KL Rahul, who is the new finding for the team as the wicketkeeper-batsman.
Sunil Gavaskar on MS Dhoni’s future:

India is scheduled to play the T20 World Cup 2020 later in October. Many are hoping to see former Indian captain’s name in India’s squad. However, Sunil Gavaskar believes that it might not be possible.
“I would certainly like to see Dhoni in India’s World Cup squad but it’s highly unlikely to happen. The team has moved on. Dhoni is not someone to make big announcements so I reckon he would silently retire from the game,” Gavaskar told news daily Dainik Jagran.
As Gavaskar mentioned, Dhoni has previously, silently, taken retirement from the Test format in 2014 with an immediate effect. He handed captaincy post to Kohli. So, he is not the one who will make a fuss before announcing retirement.
MS Dhoni recently returned to practice for the CSK:

The youngster Rishabh Pant tried his hand in Dhoni’s position but failed to impress with his glovework. While his injury gave Rahul a chance to showcase his talent behind stumps. In the recent past, Rahul has done a wicket-keeping job for Karnataka as well.
Now, as Rahul has impressed the team management, it is tough for the 38-year0old to gain a place.
