MS Dhoni’s speculations regarding his omeback never end. Now and then, news revolves around the former Indian captan’s comeback, who has last played in the World Cup 2019. Former Indian cricketer Gautam Gambhir has also questioned on what basis should Dhoni make a comeback.

Dhoni has been under sabbatical after the disheartening semi-final against New Zealand during the mega event last year. Since then, he hasn’t played a competitive match and was ready to pay the Indian Premier League 2020. But as the IPL’s fate is under dilemma because of the spread of the deadly coronavirus. Earlier, the IPL was scheduled to start from 29th March with the match between Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings.

Cricketer-turned-politician Gambir has opined that if IPL does not happen, it will be tough for CSK skipper Dhoni to make a comeback in the national team.

“If the IPL does not happen this year, then it will become very difficult for MS Dhoni to make a comeback. On what basis can he be selected since he’s not been playing for the last one or one and a half year,” Gambhir said.

“The apt replacement for Dhoni could be KL Rahul. Ever since he has donned the ’keeper’s gloves in white-ball cricket, I’ve seen his performance, both batting and ’keeping. Obviously his keeping is not as good as Dhoni’s, but if you are looking at T20 cricket, Rahul’s a utility player, can keep and bat at No. 3 or 4,” he added.

After Dhoni has left the place vacant, Rishabh Pant and KL Rahul have tried their hand as the wicketkeeper. Pant has failed to capitalise the opportunity, but Rahul has come out as a fruitful player. Gambhir believes that Rahul will be an appropriate replacement for the veteran.
