With the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2020 being stagged in the United Arab Emirates, the betting and gambling cases are rising in India. Police in Merrut has arrested five people involved in this illegal practice.
According to the report in ANI, the five accused were arrested while they were betting a Meerut’s hotel. The police have reported that the owner of the hotel is also involved in this case. Akhilesh Narayan Singh, SP, Meerut also stated that several mobile phones and laptops have been seized from the five arrested people. The investigation is still on, and more details are awaited.
Earlier, four people were arrested from Bengaluru in a similar case. PTI had reported that around Rs 4.91 lakh was seized from the accused. The Joint Commissioner of Bengaluru Police, Sandeep Patil, used Twitter to claim that the accused were using online apps for their betting activities.
IPL player reported of the corrupt approach:

A player had also reported BCCI of a corrupt approach and the board had claimed that they are taking action. Last year, hundreds of arrest were made in the gambling cases but still, it has stayed behind this season.
The main reason for the increase in this illegal practice is no proper rule in Indian Law. Public Gambling Act (1867) and The Indian Contract Act (1872) prohibit gambling in public spaces and wagering, respectively. But these laws are made since the British rule. The Indian government had not updated the law considering the new technologies.

Well, only 20 matches have been played so far and there are still forty days of IPL left as it will end on November 10 in UAE. It is expected that many more arrests will be made considering the lax laws in India.
