This week’s Friday Night Smackdown has been a very entertaining week. It focused mainly on promoting all the feuds that leading to Fastlane and WrestleMania 37. It also had a great take on promoting Edge’s previous achievements. They kept showing clippings from older Smackdown episodes on how Edge won back-to-back titles by beating big names.
Match 1 – WWE Smackdown Women’s Championship match – Sasha Banks defeated Nia Jax to retain

The show started with the WWE Smackdown Women’s Championship match straight ahead as the WWE Smackdown Women’s Champion Sasha Banks defended her title against one-half of the WWE Women’s Tag Team Champions Nia Jax. It cannot be said that it was a very entertaining match as it had the same kind of booking as we used to see in ‘Big Guy vs. Small Guy’ matches for ages. Nia Jax dominated throughout the match and at the end, Shayna Baszler tried to interrupt and she mistakenly hit her partner. As a result, Banks pinned Nia to retain the title.
Seth Rollins entered the ring and talked about last week’s incident where he Curb Stomped Cesaro twice and if the officials would not have saved Cesaro Seth would have hit him more. Shinsuke Nakamura interrupted during Seth Rollins’ promo and attacked him. Nakamura totally beat down Rollins and this has been a pretty entertaining booking.
Match 2 – Otis and Chad Gable defeated Rey Mysterio & Dominik Mysterio and the Street Profits in a three-way tag team Gauntlet match.
The Smackdown Tag Team Champions Dolph Ziggler and Robert Roode were at the commentary side during the whole match. Rey and Dominik started the match against the Street Profits. It has been a pretty entertaining first half of the match as Dominik Mysterio pinned Angelo Dawkins to earn the advantage for his side. Otis and Chad Gable joined the frame. Otis was shown as an unstoppable force in this match who pinned Dominik Mysterio to secure victory for his side.
Next up was a pretty comic backstage confrontation between Sami Zayn and Kevin Owens. Sami Zayn was seen backstage where he was shouting at some cameras by claiming ‘they’ have always underestimated him. Kevin Owens joined him and asked who exactly ‘they’ are. Sami could not clear about whom he is talking about. He asked Kevin to join him but Kevin said he has not made up his mind yet. The whole thing has been pretty funny.
Daniel Bryan entered the ring next for a promo where he cut a great promo to hype both his championship match at Fastlane and Edge vs. Jey Uso later on the night. Roman Reigns interfered and they exchanged words. It was a good promo to hype things up.
Match 4 – Baron Corbin defeated Sami Zayn
This was not a very long match as Baron Corbin dominated most part of the match and he pinned Sami Zayn with the End of Days finisher. Sami had a great heel performance to offer throughout the match. After the match, he shouted at Kevin Owens who was at the commentary table by claiming it was all unfair. Owens said he did not notice anything unfair. Sami knocked Owens out with a Helluva kick.
Big E and Apollo Crews had a split-screen interview where they exchanged words with each other. It was a good promotion for their title match at Fastlane. Apollo kept insulting Big E which Big E could not tolerate and he attacked Apollo by seeking him out. He started beating him down backstage but Apollo managed to escape somehow.
Match 5 – Bianca Belair vs. Shayna Baszler ended in a no contest
We were expecting to see a great match but it could not go on for long as Natalya and Tamina interfered and beat down both individuals. They want a hand at the tag team titles.
Main Event – Edge vs. Jey Uso
This was really special as this was Edge’s first match in Smackdown in ten years. And the match itself was pretty nice. Both performers really delivered their best to cement to a great match. With the booking time they were given, it was a nice performance. Edge pinned Jey with a sudden spear. At the end of the match, Roman Reigns attacked Edge. Daniel Bryan who was on the commentary table tried to help Edge but Roman beat him down too. The show ended as Roman Reigns stood strong in the ring.
Overall, it was a great show and it did an amazing job to promote Fastlane.
