Eoin Morgan Expects to Play In 2022 T20I World Cup But Unsure Of Playing In 2023 ODI World Cup

Eoin Morgan, England’s white-ball captain, expects to play in next year’s Twenty20 World Cup, but he is not sure he will be part of the team’s title defence at the 50-overs World Cup in 2023, the 35-year-old said.

Eoin Morgan will lead England at T20I World Cup 2021 in the United Arab Emirates and Oman. The team set to take on defending champions of 2016 West Indies in their tournament opener on Saturday in Dubai.

The next edition of the T20 World Cup will be played in Australia next year, followed by the one-day edition of the world showpiece in India in 2023. England won the 50-overs title for the first time in 2019 when the Eoin Morgan-led team defeated New Zealand in a memorable final at Lord’s, which went down the wire and was decided by boundary count after scores were tied after 50 overs and Super Over.

“I certainly see myself this time next year playing, hopefully, a really strong role in another T20 World Cup,” Morgan told the BBC on Thursday.

“That is the expectation I have put on myself. I am not sure about another two (tournaments). Obviously, results determine how well you do and how often you are kept on. But certainly, my hunger and determination are as strong as ever.”

Eoin Morgan has played 246 one-day and 107 T20 matches for England, amassing 7701 ODI runs, and 2360 T20I runs. He is 7th among leading run-scorers in T20Is behind Virat Kohli, Martin Guptill, Rohit Sharma, Paul Stirling, Aaron Finch and Mohammad Hafeez.

Similarly, he aggregated just 151 runs in 7 innings in The Hundred, leading London Spirit.

Eoin Morgan’s form has been the subject of much debate ahead of the tournament after he struggled for runs when playing for Kolkata Knight Riders in the IPL, averaging just over 11 with four ducks. During the summer, he also notched only 49 runs in four innings for England in T20 internationals against Pakistan and Sri Lanka. However, he admits hitting big scores can be difficult when batting at No 6 in the format.
