After intense rumours over the past few weeks, Dutch Legend Louis Van Gaal has been appointed by Manchester United to take over at the Old Trafford club after the World Cup. The 62 year old is currently the Holland national coach and will lead the Oranje in Brazil in the showcase event. Van Gaal will take over from David Moyes, the Scot who has a terrible campaign with the Red Devils in a disappointing season, where United finished a lowly seventh in the Premier League standings.
In the wake of the decision, club Legend Ryan Giggs has also his retirement and the Welsh legend will assist Van Gaal. This brings down curtains on all illustrious career which has spanned two decades involving a whopping 963 appearances for the club.
Giggs was quoted as saying,“I am thrilled to have the chance to serve as assistant manager. Manchester United has been a huge part of my life and I’m delighted to be able to continue that relationship in such a key role.”
Van Gaal becomes the first non British manager to take charge at Old Trafford and despite his legendary status, the former Barcelona, Ajax and Bayern Munich boss will have his task cut out. “This club has big ambitions; I too have big ambitions. Together I’m sure we will make history.” Van Gaal however has insisted that he knows the Premier League well and would do a good job.
The first task that Van Gaal would have to do is to get United back in the Champions League but given the club’s past history and stature, absence of top flight competition wouldn’t have any say over potential summer signings, the clubs has said.
