India Need To Plan Death Overs A Little Better Next Time - Wasim Jaffer 1

Former India opener Wasim Jaffer opined that India need to worry about how they bowled in the death overs in the second match against Sri Lanka in Dharamsala. Notable that India conceded 72 runs in the last 4 overs on Saturday.

Despite that, India chased down the target comfortably in the end as Shreyas Iyer 74*(44), Sanju Samson 39(25), and Ravindra Jadeja 45*(18) scripted a 7-wicket win to seal the series with one match to go.

However, Wasim Jaffer warned India to relook their bowling plans in death overs. Indian bowling had an off day on Saturday as Harshal Patel faced the major assault as he conceded 52 runs in 4 overs. Bhuvneshwar Kumar also conceded 36 runs in his quota.

Till the 15th over, Indian bowling looked pretty much in control. (But) when Shanaka came in, he changed the complexion of the game. India need to worry a little about the way they bowled at the death. Yes, the conditions were cold and not ideal. But they still need to plan a little better next time,” Wasim Jaffer said.

Jaffer further explained that they bowled most of the deliveries right in the slot and it was also a tiny sized ground so ball was traveling nicely.

“The lengths that were bowled at the death, most of them were in the slot, even the slower balls. It was very unlike Harshal (Patel), he doesn’t do that often. They’ll probably look to bowl slower bouncers (in the next game), let them (Sri Lanka) hit on the side of the ground rather than straight, which looked pretty small,” he added.

“Chahal is definitely high on confidence”- Wasim Jaffer

Bumrah (4-0-24-1) and Chahal (4-0-27-1) were the only bowlers who conceded runs with an economy of less than 7. Jaffer lauded Chahal’s efforts who bowled brilliantly in a ground where spinners didn’t get much assistance.

Chahal is definitely high on confidence, the way he is bowling for the last 6-8 months. On top of that, on such a small ground, bowling to the left-handers as well, he looked in complete control. He’s got a lot of variations. Six an over was an outstanding effort,” Wasim Jaffer said.

The third and final match will be played on Sunday.
