Dimitar Berbatov’s comments over Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi have resurfaced after the Portuguese is searching for a new club for a second consecutive summer.

Cristiano Ronaldo joined Manchester United last summer from Juventus, but could again change sides this transfer window. United’s failure to qualify for the Champions League has taken a serious toll over Ronaldo.

Meanwhile, Messi is hoping to settle in at PSG in his second season at the club after leaving FC Barcelona last summer.

Amidst Ronaldo’s exit drama and Messi’s preparations for the new season, Berbatov choosing the Argentine over his former teammate and explaining in depth the reasons have made a comeback.

Berbatov shared the dressing room with Cristiano for the 2008/09 season, before the Portuguese left for Real Madrid in 2009.

The two enjoyed immense success together, lifting the Premier League title, Club World Cup and the League Cup in the 2008/09 season.

However, back in 2017 while speaking to ESPN FC Berbatov said, “He (Lionel Messi ) is the f***ing greatest. Ronaldo is brilliant, Messi is more my kind of player. He sees the game so clearly. He can score, create, he’s the complete player, the best ever probably.”

But he was no short of praises for Ronaldo, further adding, “Young players try and imitate the best players like Ronaldo. They try to imitate the hair, the clothes, the cars, the tricks. I try to tell them how hard Cristiano Ronaldo trained in training and after training. He only wanted to be the best. Everything else came after.”

Berbatov’s comments came after Ronaldo had just swooped in FIFA The Best award and his fifth Ballon d’Or that year, after winning a second consecutive Champions League title with Real.

But the Portugal captain is yet to win either of the individual awards since then. On the other hand, Messi has bagged two Ballon d’Ors and a FIFA The Best in the meantime.

PSG are now discussing extending Messi’s stay at the club beyond 2023, while Barcelona are teasing his comeback next summer with exploring options to execute the move.
