Manchester United began their Erik ten Hag era with a disastrous 2-1 loss against Brighton at Old Trafford. The Red Devils started the new campaign in the exact way they ended their last one, with a defeat to Brighton. Ten Hag benched Cristiano Ronaldo in his first game in charge and then after, nothing went to his plans.

However, United fans were particularly angry at one player, who they think was the reason for the downfall. Scott McTominay is the man in discussion here who faced sever backlash from the fans. The midfielder as usual started alongside his partner Fred. The two were unable to dominate for United in the middle of the park and conceded a defeat.

Manchester United fans have a meltdown after McTominay disaster

McTominay and Fred have come under the criticism from both the fans and pundits for delivering horrible performances consistently. Many have called for a change in the midfield, only for the disappointment of watching the ‘McFred’ take the pitch week-in, week-out.

While Fred lasted for only 53 minutes before being taken-off, McTominay followed him at the 78th minute to the bench. The Brazilian in his 53 minutes posted zero tackles and duels won, whereas McTominay earned a yellow right in the 25th minute of the game.

McTominay’s terrible 78-minute show invited enraging expressions from the fans as one even labeled him ‘worst footballer I’ve ever seen’.

A poor display from Ten Hag’s men has only piled up the pressure on him. Moreover, a nightmare start is only coupled with United’s failure to land their priority targets in the transfer market. And given their display against Brighton, Man United’s transfer targets would now be running away miles from a potential move.

United were hit with a first-half brace from Pascal Gross as they were then helped with an Alexis Mac Allister own goal in the 68th minute. As evident, United even failed to score despite having Cristiano Ronaldo on the pitch as Ten Hag was served with a reality check in his first game itself. The Red Devils will now look to sign more players before their next game against Brentford on August 13.
