Former Liverpool defender Phil Thompson has made stunning claims about club’s new signing Fabio Carvalho. The player-turned-pundit has lavished praise on the teenager who made the move from Fulham to Liverpool after an impressive season with the Championship side, helping them to promotion to the Premier League.

Thompson believes Carvalho is ‘going to be a star’ at Anfield given the talent his possesses. The versatile attacking midfielder has the abilities of playing on the wings as well, so far operating on the left flank for the Reds. Carvalho made his debut for Liverpool in their Premier League opener against his former club Fulham.

Thompson feels Fabio Carvalho is ‘David Beckham’ for Liverpool

Fabio Carvalho has earned the praises he has been showered with till now, after plying his trade in the Championship with Fulham. The Portuguese was a regular with the Cottagers, making 36 appearances in the second tier last season. he racked up 10 goals and 8 assists across those 36 games helping Fulham to the Premier League.

Liverpool were quick in scouting the 19-year-old and almost snapped him up in January earlier this year. However, the deal collapsed and Jurgen Klopp had to wait till May when the Reds finally sealed a deal for Carvalho for a fee of £5m, plus £2.7m in add-ons. Fulham also inserted a 20% sell-on clause in the deal they struck for their prodigy.

Talking to Off the Ball, Phil Thompson was unstoppable while heaping praise on Fabio Carvalho. The former Liverpool captain said: “The boy [Fabio] Carvalho is going to be some player by the way. Because of his age and because he’s so young you would think that, but you have a year in the Championship and that is a tough league.”

He further added that Liverpool have gotten their hands on someone who is like the mould of Manchester United great David Beckham. he continued: “I’ve seen enough of him at Fulham, I didn’t watch all of the games, but what he brings as much as goals are his assists. That’s what people look at. Yes, you can help people with those, but you need to have it a la David Beckham and that’s what Carvalho is, he’s going to be a star, he will shock everybody.”

Fabio Carvalho certainly seems as a bargain for Liverpool at £7.7 million by the words of Thompson. The midfielder now has the chance to rock Anfield after Liverpool lost two of their important midfielders to serious injuries. Thiago and Curtis Jones are out for over a month due to hamstring knocks and Klopp could look to Carvalho in order to provide cover for the duo in the midfield.
