Chelsea are plotting to present Manchester United center-back Harry Maguire a chance to revive his deteriorating career as they have reportedly “enquired” about him for a move this summer. The report comes as shocker since Maguire has time and time again delivered disastrous performances for the Red Devils and Chelsea have witnessed the same.
Maguire since making a £80 million move from Leicester City to Man United back in 2019 has failed to his full potential. Moreover, he seems to be losing his place as well in the starting eleven despite bearing the captain’s armband. Maguire’s future at Old Trafford has certainly turned bleak and Chelsea are ready to take him in order to solve their center-back issues.
Chelsea planning swap deal between Pulisic and Maguire
While Chelsea have taken interest in landing Harry Maguire, United have reciprocated it with theirs in Christian Pulisic. However, it was last week itself when United enquired about a possible loan move for Pulisic. The American has found it difficult to settle in Thomas Tuchel’s system and is seeking a move out.
Chelsea, as a result are planning to propose a swap deal between Pulisic and Maguire. The Blues are trying hard to replenish their depleted defense after center-back duo Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen left earlier this summer. Further on, Malang Sarr too has joined AS Monaco on loan and Chelsea have only managed to bring in one defender, Kalidou Koulibaly.
Moreover, Chelsea have developed interest in Maguire after their bid for Leicester center-back Wesley Fofana has been rejected. The offer reported to be in the range of a whopping £70 million has failed to lure the Foxes into selling the 21-year-old center-back. As a result, they are weighing up a move for Maguire who could be available and come for cheap.
United have set the target to overhaul their backline with Raphael Varane touted as the next leader of their defense. They are ready to part ways to Maguire, with Chelsea circling around him. And with the idea of getting their prime target Pulisic in return, the Red Devils could certainly anticipate a deal before the deadline day.
Maguire was literally in shambles as United lost their first two league games of the season against Brighton and Brentford, conceding 6 goals combined across the fixtures. Manager Erik ten Hag is now seriously considering the option of dropping Maguire for their next game, against Liverpool. This could possibly be the curtains on the England international’s time at Old Trafford.
On the the hand, Christian Pulisic will be playing the ‘wait and watch’ game as the two sides are yet to formally open talks over any transfer. Meanwhile, United will focus on getting the deal over the line for Real Madrid midfielder Casemiro as a £70 million agreement between the two giants has been struck.
