The Evening Standard have reported that Tottenham Hotspur want to sign Chelsea center-back Trevoh Chalobah before the deadline day of this transfer window. While Chelsea are searching for a new center-back, bidding for Leicester City’s Wesley Fofana, Chalobah could then make way for the incoming defender. Tottenham have registered fresh interest in the 23-year-old to bolster their backline.
Chelsea have lost two of their solid defenders, Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen this summer and are looking to replace them. Furthermore, Malang Sarr too has left on loan with AS Monaco, and Napoli’s Kalidou Koulibaly is the only defender to arrive so far at Stamford Bridge. Thomas Tuchel has demanded more with a deal for Fofana being negotiated. On the other hand, they need to sell as well with Chalobah ready to part ways.

Tottenham impressed with Chalobah’s exploits in the Premier League
Trevoh Chalobah is another exciting product of Chelsea’s academy, who made his senior debut in 2021. Thomas Tuchel handed him his start with the Chelsea first-team and he went Chalobah went on to repay the faith placed in him by the gaffer. He soon became a regular under Tuchel, starting plenty of games in the backline during the initial stages of the last season.
However, his starting spot disappeared after Thiago Silva, Antonio Rudiger and Cesar Azpilicueta formed a solid back-three. Moreover, Chalobah has featured only 10 times in the starting eleven since the turn of the year. While Rudiger and Christensen’s exits were expected to resume his regular football at the club, Chelsea pursuing a deal for Wesley Fofana has further put Chalobah’s spot in jeopardy.
The Blues have tabled a whopping £70 million bid for Fofana, which Leicester have reportedly rejected. Nonetheless, Chelsea are determined to push for a deal since the 21-year-old has already agreed personal terms with them. As a result, Chalobah could seek playing time somewhere else, with Tottenham now in the fray.

Antonio Conte has beefed up every department of his team this summer, only for the backline which saw a single signing of Clement Lenglet on loan. Furthermore, Spurs’ Argentine center-back Christian Romero has sustained an adductor muscle injury and is ruled out for four weeks. Conte now wants a quick solution, with Chalobah being one of those since he has an experience of plying his trade in the Premier League.
While he is yet to take the field this season, Chalobah featured 20 times for Chelsea in the league last season, racking up 2 tackles, 5.4 passes under pressure, 8.2 presses, 2.1 clearances per game and 90.6% pass completion rate. Tottenham feel they can close a deal before September 1, despite Chalobah penning a long term contract at Stamford Bridge which runs till the summer of 2026.
However, Tottenham’s approach is still undisclosed, whether they want a permanent deal or a loan one for the 23-year-old. The report from Evening Standard further adds that Italian side AS Roma are also monitoring Chalobah’s situation and could lauch an offer. Tottenham will have to fend-off the potential competition from their former boss Jose Mourinho’s side in order to land the center-back.
