Other than being the first ever day-night match in India using pink balls, the Cricket Association of Bengal’s super division final to be held at Eden Gardens from Saturday to Tuesday also stand out for another significant reason.

The local match to be organized experimentally under lights and telecast live on Star Sports before India finally take a call on hosting day-night Test against Nez Zeeland later this year, will mark a welcome return of Arun Lal to the commentary box after a battle with cancer.

Former India opener Arun Lal is now gearing up to resume his cricket commentary career on Saturday.

The 61-year-old, who was diagnosed with jaw cancer and had to undergo a 14-hour long surgery to replace his jaw in February this year was forced to take a break from his work.

“I feel much better now and am doing commentary on Saturday. It is for the CAB Super League final to be played with the pink ball,” he said from Kolkata.

“I am very positive and determined to get back to normal as fast as I can,” he added. “The doctors at Tata Memorial Center (Kolkata) have performed a miracle. I am looking great with very little distortion,” Lal was delighted. Dr. P. Arun from Tata Memorial Center also appreciated Arun Lal’s grit.

While CAB president Sourav Ganguly couldn’t be reached, another CAB official revealed that Arun Lal has obtained physician’s clearance to sit with the mic. “His wife Reena isn’t keeping well. Even then, Arun has said he would be happy to return to the com box,” he said.

It was last April when Arun opened up about his silent battle with cancer. According to reports, he was fighting cancer since it was detected in January 2016.

Arun Lal has played 16 Tests and 13 ODIs for India between 1982 and 1989.
