The 2022 FIFA World Cup is now down to an affair of just 8 teams, as the quarterfinals stage of the tournament now kicks-off this weekend. The runners-up from 2018 edition Croatia take on Brazil, the team which last its world title 20 years ago, in 2002. Croatia may not be in the blistering form they were back in 2018, but they still have proven their mettle once again at the tournament, by reaching the quarterfinals.

However, their resolute was tested in the previous round, when Japan took a 1-0 lead against them in the Round of 16. But Zlatko Dalic’s men held their nerves, and showed the world why they deserved to be in the final at the previous edition. Ivan Perisic equalized things in the second half to take the game to penalty shootout after either of the sides failed to find a winner. Croatia shot-stopper Dominik Livaković was the hero here, saving three Japan penalties sending his side into the quarterfinals.

Croatia are now unbeaten in their last 10 games in all competitions, and a Brazil test now awaits them. The five-time world champions are desperate to clinch their sixth title, and it has been showing since the previous editions of the competition. They are also yet to reach the final of the World Cup since their triumph in 2002, with their best performance coming during the 2014 tournament, which they hosted as well and reached the semifinals.

But its high time now the Selecaos win the competition, and this seems their best chance to do it. They have brushed aside South Korea 4-1 in the last-16, and emerged as group winners from their Group G. The only stain on Tite’s team at this tournament has been the Cameroon loss which came on the final matchday of the group stages. However, that hasn’t disrupted their plans, and a timely boost of Neymar returning for the knockouts after missing two of three group games is just a bliss for the South Americans.
