It seems Mason Greenwood’s life is getting back to normal after all the criminal proceedings against him were dropped. Greenwood, 21, was charged for attempted rape, controlling and coercive behaviour and assault occasioning actual bodily harm in January 2022 on his girlfriend. However, the Crown Prosecution Service has now dropped all the charges as they cited that there was “no longer a realistic prospect of conviction” after key witnesses backed down from cooperating ahead of November hearing.
Manchester United had quickly suspended Mason Greenwood following the investigation launched on him. Now that the charges have been dropped, United have released an official statement already that the club will first conduct an internal investigation headed by CEO Richard Arnold before making a decision on revoking Greenwood’s suspension. And meanwhile, the versatile forward has dropped a huge hint over his return to the club.

Mason Greenwood ‘edits’ Instagram bio hinting towards a return to United
Mason Greenwood has been away from United for more a year now, and is yet to re-join the squad following the dropping of charges. There are reports claiming that the club is not yet decided over whether to let the winger, who joined the club at the age of seven, continue at the club anymore or not. United fears the sexual assault charges slapped on him would deteriorate the image of their ‘United brand’ and would severe ties with their 25 global sponsors.
On the other hand, there are rumours as well that Greenwood is looking to leave United and England as well in a bid to reboot his ailing career. The rumours claim Greenwood feels his relationship with the fans is irreparable and that he would have face abuses whenever he takes the field. It is also being speculated that the 21-year-old feels United didn’t support him enough through this personal crisis and that he has told his family and friends he doesn’t wish to play for the Red Devils anymore.
However, defying all the reports and rumours, Greenwood seems to have set his eyes on a return to United, at least according to his edited Instagram bio. The striker had removed ‘Manchester United’ and ‘Nike’ [who are his boot sponsors] after criminal proceedings and investigation was opened against him. But he has now added them back to his bio, as well as deleted over 100 photos and kept only nine which are in United colours.

There is a theory now doing rounds amongst the fans and social media that this could be the England international’s hint that he is eyeing a return to Old Trafford. However, its ultimately United will have the last say after they get done with their internal investigation. Erik ten Hag as already helped his time cope with the Cristiano Ronaldo controversy, and apparently will have to face a somewhat similar situation if Greenwood is to enter his dressing room.
Meanwhile, the winger also released a statement wherein he thanked ‘family, loved ones and friends for their support’ and further stated that he won’t be commenting on the matter anymore ‘at this time’. It is still unknown when United will close their investigation and whether that will even yearn out a positive result for the player. But apparently it seems, Mason Greenwood has options lying on his table, with The Guardian revealing that Chinese clubs are interested in taking the striker who has scored 35 goals and provided 12 assists in 129 games for the Red Devils.
