Former World Cup-winning captain Kapil Dev feels it unfair to compare Suryakumar Yadav with Sanju Samson, stating every player goes through these kinds of phases in their career. The World no. 1 T20 batter was dismissed for Golden Ducks on all three occasions against Australia in the three-match ODI series.
Suryakumar Yadav, who replaced Shreyas Iyer in the playing 11, as the latter missed out on the series owing to a serious back injury and has failed miserably without scoring a single run in three matches. There was a lot of criticism with shot selection, especially in the 3rd ODI going for a square cut on the very first ball when the ball is turning off the pitch.

Speaking to ABP News, former Indian all-rounder Kapil Dev believes it is the right decision by the Indian team management to give chance to Surya Kumar Yadav as he has shown the world about his capability in white ball cricket.
“A cricketer who has played so well will always get more chances. Don’t compare Surya with Sanju Samson, it doesn’t seem right. If Sanju goes through a bad phase then you will talk about somebody else. This should not happen. If the team management has decided to back Suryakumar Yadav then he should be given more chances”. Kapil Dev Said
Shreyas has been the best ODI batter for India in 2022 injured himself during the final test of the Border Gavaskar Trophy. With Shreyas Iyer’s injury looking serious India might want to sort out their NO.4 going into the World Cup Year.
It looks like, Suryakumar Yadav and Sanju Samson are the two most eligible candidates for this role after the failure of Surya in the ODI series against Australia opened up the opportunity for Sanju Samson who has done exceptionally well in the limited opportunity to him. He has scored 330 runs in 11 ODIs so far at an impressive batting average of 66.
This Is Nothing New In ODIs – Kapil Dev On Sending Suryakumar Yadav At No.7 Against Australia
The Indian Cricketing legend further continued about India’s decision to send Suryakumar Yadav to NO.7 in the final and deciding ODI against Australia has defended the management’s decision as shuffling the batting order according to the situation is right and it has happened many times.
“It’s very easy to talk after the match is finished. Maybe the idea behind sending Suryakumar at No.7 was to give him an opportunity as a finisher. This is nothing new in ODIs(on changing the batting order). This has happened many times before. Yes, at times a batter’s confidence may be dented if he has been dragged down the order”. Kapil Dev added
A lot of puzzles will be answered during the IPL 2023, as the player’s performance in the IPL will be closely monitored by the Indian Team management before taking a call on India No.4 for the all-important ODI World Cup 2023.
