Former Indian Dazzling opener Virender Sehwag is surprised that Ruturaj Gaikwad has not been provided with a long run in the Indian colours. The Chennai Super Kings opener has played only 11 matches for Men in blue and has often been sidelined in the favor of Ishan Kishan and Shuman Gill.
Ruturaj Gaikwad played an exceptional knock for Chennai Super Kings in their opening game against Gujarat Titans, where he looked at his absolute best as he struck nine superb sixes to score 92 runs off 50 balls in an astonishing batting display.
Speaking on the Cricbuzz show, about Gaikwad’s batting prowess, Virender Sehwag wants the right-hander batter to convert his fifties into hundreds and is surprised by his exclusion from the Indian team.
“It is not about scoring fifties, what he does is he converts those into hundreds. That is what makes him special. When he had scored runs for CSK, two seasons back, he had scored a century as well. But I was surprised he didn’t get more opportunities to play for India because when others get the chance and then they perform, he will have to wait for more,” Virender Sehwag said.
Earlier, Virender Sehwag lauded Ruturaj Gaikwad for his exceptional performance in Ahmedabad, stating that it was a joy to watch him bat comparing him to Virat Kohli, and hailed him for shot selection against Gujarat Titans. Sehwag further reckoned that Gaikwad was unfortunate to miss out on the well-deserved century against Gujarat Titans, where he fell out by 8 runs short of a century.

Virender Sehwag believes Ruturaj Gaikwad is the ideal successor for MS Dhoni in Chennai Super Kings. As they were a lot of talks around Ben Stokes and Ruturaj Gaikwad as the captaincy option of the four-time champions. The right-hander batter will look to continue his fine form for Chennai Super Kings in IPL 2023.
“If this season goes well, then he may not have to wait long for India to return. I feel Ruturaj Gaikwad is the ideal successor of MS Dhoni for the captaincy of CSK,” Virender Sehwag said.
Ruturaj Gaikwad had a stunning 2021 season scoring 635 runs which helped him break into the Indian team, but had a very limited opportunity in the Indian team. Chennai Super Kings will look to make comeback against Lucknow Super Giants on their home soil on April 2.
