IPL 2023: “He Can’t Keep Going On Reputation”- Michael Vaughan Says Prithvi Shaw Needs Some Runs To Keep Playing For DC 1

Former England skipper Michael Vaughan showed concern and frustration for Delhi Capitals’ opener Prithvi Shaw and said that the right-hander cannot keep playing on his past reputation and needs to score big in order to repay the faith the franchise has shown in him.

The DC team has backed the talented opener despite 12, 7, 0, 1, 0, and 13 have been Prithvi Shaw’s scores in this season’s IPL. Though in the past seasons, Shaw’s aggressive batting in the powerplay has benefitted the Delhi Capitals, in the last couple of seasons, Shaw has lost all his form and confidence.

Speaking on the Cricbuzz Vaughan said: “I think he needs a big innings. He needs some runs. He can’t keep going on reputation. He can’t keep going with what is done in the past. He needs to produce the runs here and now. He has got a poor start. He has not gotten out of Powerplay yet with the bat in hand yet. Early in the tournament, Mark Wood bowled him. His feet went nowhere. It was like he was waiting for the short ball and he was nowhere near the line or the pitch of the ball.”

Shaw failed to come good in DC’s chase of 128 against KKR and Vaughan had said: “It was a good opportunity for the 23-year-old to get back into form, “It is a target that won’t intimidate you as a batter you are not looking at 190s. There is no real pressure in terms of the scoring rate. I think he comes out plays the way he has done in the past but he needs to be there at the end of the sixth. He has to see his team home and 60-70 not out if he can be.”

The young right-hander once again fell early in the powerplay to the spin of Varun Chakravarthy after scoring 13.

Prithvi Shaw Should Learn From His Mistakes: Virender Sehwag

Before Vaughan, it was former India captain Virender Sehwag who had slammed Prithvi Shaw for his poor batting. After his tame dismissal in the Delhi Capitals vs Gujarat Titans game, Sehwag had said that Shaw is not learning from his mistakes.

He also said that while Shubman Gill, who won the 2018 U19 World Cup with India when Shaw was captained, has evolved brilliantly and now is a staple in all three formats for the Indian team, Shaw is still getting out in the same manner.

Sehwag said on Cricbuzz, “He has been dismissed playing those kinds of shots so many times…but he should also learn from his mistakes, right? Look at Shubman Gill, who played U-19 cricket with him and is now playing Test, ODIs and T20Is for India, but Shaw is still struggling in IPL.”

“He has to make the most of this IPL platform and score runs. Ruturaj Gaikwad scored 600-odd runs in an IPL season. Shubman Gill also scored big runs. So even Shaw has to be consistent with his IPL scores.”

It remains to be seen whether DC continue with Prithvi Shaw in the XI when they next face Sunrisers Hyderabad in Hyderabad on April 24.
