Liverpool’s latest signing Klavan set for medical today

Augsburg defender Ragnar Klavan is all set to have his medical later today ahead of his switch to Liverpool.

Jurgen Klopp will pay £4.2million for the defender, who will replace Martin Skrtel at back, according to a report from Liverpool Echo.

The Liverpool boss has identified the Estonian international as the perfect fit to come in and strengthen his central defensive options following injuries to Mamadou Sakho and Joe Gomez, and Tiago Ilori’s Olympic Games call-up.

Thirty-year-old Klavan has so far won more than 100 caps for his country, and has spent four years with Augsburg in the Bundesliga, helping the unfashionable German side to qualify for the Europa League in 2014/15.

He featured in both legs as Augsburg met Liverpool in a last 32 tie back in February, and is now looks almost done deal to become Anfield’s fifth new arrival this summer, following Loris Karius, Sadio Mane, Marko Grujic and Joel Matip, the latter two having agreed their moves in January.

Powerfully built, standing 6 ft 1 in tall and dominant in the air, Klavan is solid in the tackle as well as being exceptionally reliable: on average last season he made less than one four per match, and picked up just two bookings.

Although he has played almost exclusively as a centre-back for his current club, FC Augsburg, he is also capable of playing as a left-sided full-back, and is efficient in bringing the ball out of defence.

His signature represents a good piece of business for Klopp, who knows the player well from his Bundesliga days.
