Following a three-year stay in the top division, Leeds were relegated from it on Sunday. Their 4-1 loss to Tottenham at home saw them finish the season in 19th position.

The Yorkshire club had hoped to avoid the bottom three on the last day of the season, but Everton ended up doing so after defeating Bournemouth 1-0. As a result, Leeds will join Leicester and the already-relegated Southampton in the Championship the following year.

The misery was a long cry from Leeds’ strong start to the season, when they won their first three games in August by scores of 3-0 wins against Chelsea, Southampton, and Wolves at home. Back then, Leeds’ Twitter account made fun of Chelsea by sharing a screenshot of the Blues’ official match updates, which suddenly changed from the jubilant “Starting to assert ourselves!” to the melancholy “quickfire goals from Brenden Aaronson and Rodrigo” reporting.

That tweet was accompanied by the message “Life comes at you fast,” and on Sunday, Chelsea’s account quoted it with the words “It certainly does,” adding insult to Leeds’ injury. But the intended effect of their joke was not achieved since the opposition supporters were unimpressed by a major club like Chelsea making fun of a demoted team.
