Lionel Messi ended his sojourn with Paris Saint-Germain on a dismal note as the Ligue 1 champions suffered a shock loss against mid-table Clermont in what was his final game with the French outfit.

A couple of years ago, the World Cup-winner had signed up for PSG after sensationally leaving Barcelona. Lionel Messi had signed a two-year deal – with an option for a third. However, he has decided against extending his stay in Paris and will be seen playing for a new club in the coming season.

With the former Barcelona star’s association with PSG coming to an end, it would be safe to say that his experience at PSG has been far from what he or anyone else expected. Messi was expected to lead PSG to a historic Champions League triumph after he joined them in 2021. However, things did not go well because of several reasons like injury and poor chemistry with teammates.

Things took a turn for the worse in the recently-concluded season. While he led Argentina to glory in the FIFA World Cup, he failed to inspire PSG in the same manner, much to the fans’ disappointment. And the fans did not shy away from expressing their displeasure as they continuously booed and jeered Messi. Messi received a hostile reception from the PSG fans even in his last game for the club.

The 7-time Ballon d’Or winner still managed to have a decent season at a personal level. He ended the season with the highest number of assists in the league with 16 and was also included in the Ligue 1 Team of the Season after helping PSG clinch the title.

Lionel Messi exit impacts PSG’s social media presence:

While only time will tell how Lionel Messi’s exit impacts PSG on the field, it is safe to say that it has already started impacting the club’s social media presence. Messi’s departure has made thousands of fans unfollowing the club’s Instagram account.

According to one fan’s research on Reddit, the Ligue 1 champions have already lost over 600,000 followers on social media just across the weekend. Messi is one of the most followed athletes in the world and it is not surprising at all that his unceremonious exit has impacted PSG’s social media accounts.
